About this symbol

The little v over č is a háček, Czech for a small hook. It goes back to the reforms of Czech spelling linked to the religious reformer Jan Hus in the early fifteenth century, which used marks over letters in place of letter pairs. Č sounds like ch in church, and the háček spread to Slovak, Slovene, Croatian, Lithuanian and Latvian.
