Technical and Miscellaneous Symbols
Mac modifier keys, media transport controls, printer and paper symbols: this block collects the symbols technical documentation and hardware labelling need but a standard keyboard never had room for. Many were added specifically so software could stop using tiny icon images for things like the command key or the eject button.
None of these have a Windows Alt code. Copy the character directly, or use its HTML entity or Unicode value.
Questions
What is the Mac command key symbol?
The character ⌘, Unicode U+2318, sometimes called the place of interest symbol before Apple adopted it for the Command key.
Is there an Alt code for the Mac option key symbol?
No. Use the Unicode value U+2325, or copy the character directly.
Why do some of these symbols look like tiny icons?
They were added to Unicode specifically to replace icon images in interfaces and documentation, a media play button or eject symbol, for instance, as an actual character rather than a picture.
What is the symbol for Shift on a Mac keyboard?
The upwards white arrow, U+21E7, used in Mac menus and shortcut labels alongside the Command and Option symbols.
Why don’t Windows keyboards use these same symbols?
Windows keyboards print the word directly on the key, Ctrl, Alt, and so on, so software rarely needs a standalone character to represent them.
