About this symbol

Ğ, the Turkish soft g, came in with the Latin alphabet that replaced Arabic script for Turkish in 1928, under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. It is not pronounced as a g at all: it lengthens the vowel before it, as in the name Erdoğan.
