About this symbol

The tilde over ñ began as a scribe’s shortcut. Medieval writers saved space by writing one n with a small n above it in place of nn, and over time the small n flattened into a wavy line. The sign then spread to words that never had a double n, such as señor.

Ñ is the letter of the Spanish language itself, and it is also used in Galician, Basque, Filipino and Guaraní. When a European Commission report in 1991 questioned Spain’s rule that keyboards sold there must have the key, the Real Academia Española called it a serious attack on the language.
