About this symbol
Ö is a letter of its own in Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, Hungarian and Estonian, and in German it is o with an umlaut. Rock fans know it from the “metal umlaut”: the band Blue Öyster Cult added it to their name, probably in 1971, and the rock writer Richard Meltzer said it was his suggestion.
