About this symbol

Vitriol was the alchemistsโ€™ name for the sulphates of metals, and oil of vitriol was sulphuric acid. Alchemists read the word as an acronym of a Latin motto, โ€œvisita interiora terrae rectificando invenies occultum lapidemโ€: visit the inside of the earth, and by purifying you will find the hidden stone.
