About this symbol

The I Ching is built from 64 hexagrams, each of six lines, broken or unbroken. ䷀, six unbroken lines, is the first, the Creative. In 1703 Gottfried Leibniz, who had worked out binary arithmetic, saw that the hexagrams could be read as the binary numbers from 0 to 63, and wrote about it with excitement.
