About this symbol

Arrows pointing the way are surprisingly recent in print. One early example is in a treatise on hydraulics by the French engineer Bernard Forest de Bélidor, published in 1737.

Mathematics found other jobs for it. G. H. Hardy wrote the arrow under “lim” for limits in A Course of Pure Mathematics in 1908, and David Hilbert used → for “implies” in logic in 1922. On Windows the four arrows sit at the very start of the old DOS character set, so → is simply Alt+26.
