About this symbol
ASCII’s first version, in 1963, had an up arrow at the position the caret ^ took over later. The language ALGOL 60 used ↑ to raise a number to a power, and that is why ^ still means “to the power of” in calculators and spreadsheets: 2^3 is 8.
Donald Knuth later used rows of up arrows for numbers far too large to write any other way, a system known as Knuth’s up-arrow notation.
