About this symbol

The digits 0 to 9 were developed in India, passed through the Arabic-speaking world, and reached Europe largely through Fibonacci’s book Liber Abaci of 1202, which showed merchants how much easier they made sums than Roman numerals. In much of continental Europe the 1 is written with a long upstroke, which is why the 7 there gets a bar.
