About this symbol

G is a Roman invention. Early Latin used C for both the k and g sounds, and in the third century BC a stroke was added to C to make a separate G, an idea traditionally credited to Spurius Carvilius Ruga, who ran one of Rome’s first schools. G took the place in the alphabet of Z, which the Romans had dropped.
