About this symbol

H comes from the Phoenician heth, which the early Greeks used as heta, for an h sound. Classical Greek later reused it as eta, a long e, but the Romans had already borrowed it with its h sound. In English the letter’s own name, aitch, is pronounced with or without an h, a long-running argument.
