About this symbol

Early printers used u and v as two shapes of one letter: v at the start of a word and u in the middle, whatever the sound, so the King James Bible of 1611 prints vnto and haue. The modern rule, u for the vowel and v for the consonant, settled in English in the seventeenth century.
