About this symbol
The ace of spades is the most decorated card in an English pack because of tax. For centuries playing cards in Britain carried a duty, and from 1765 the ace of spades was printed by the government to show the duty had been paid, with an elaborate design to stop forgers. The duty was abolished in 1960, but makers still decorate the card.
