About this symbol
The jack of spades and the jack of hearts are the one-eyed jacks, the two jacks shown in profile in the standard English design. Many poker games make them wild cards. The jack was called the knave until the nineteenth century, when J was printed in the corner to avoid confusing Kn with K for king.
