About this symbol

Delta comes from dalet, a Phoenician letter. In maths and science Δ means a change in something, so Δt is a change in time.

River deltas are named after the letter, for the triangle of land at the mouth of the Nile. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote of “the Delta, as the Ionians call it”, meaning only the Nile, and the word only became a general term for any river mouth in English in the late eighteenth century, with the historian Edward Gibbon.
