About this symbol

Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, so “the Alpha and the Omega” means the beginning and the end. Its name means “big O”, set against omicron, “small o”: in ancient Greek they were a long and a short o.

In physics Ω is the symbol for the ohm, the unit of electrical resistance. Unicode also has a separate ohm sign, Ω, but only so that older character sets convert cleanly; the Greek letter is the one to use.
