About this symbol

Sigma comes from the Phoenician letter shin. The small letter has two forms: σ inside a word and ς at the end of one, as in the Greek word σοφός, wise. A third, rounded form, the lunate sigma ϲ, shaped like a C, was common in late ancient writing.

In maths the capital Σ means “add these up”; Unicode gives that use its own character, ∑.
