About this symbol
Digamma, shaped like an F, was a letter of early Greek for a w sound. Classical Athenian Greek had lost the sound and dropped the letter, but not before the Etruscans and Romans borrowed it: it is the ancestor of the Latin F. Its name means double gamma, from its shape, one Γ on another.
