About this symbol

Beta comes from beth, the Phoenician letter whose name meant house, and with alpha it gave us the word “alphabet”. Ernest Rutherford named beta rays in 1899, as the second kind of radiation he identified.

Software borrowed the letters for its testing stages: an alpha version is tried inside a company, and a beta version goes out to users to test before release.
