About this symbol

Mu comes from mem, the Phoenician letter whose name meant water, and it gave Latin its M. In science μ is the prefix micro-, one millionth, and in physics it is also the usual symbol for a coefficient of friction.

Unicode has a separate micro sign, µ, kept for older character sets; it looks the same.
