About this symbol
The Welsh mathematician William Jones first used π for the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter in his Synopsis Palmariorum Matheseos of 1706. Leonhard Euler took it up, and his books of 1736 and 1748 made it standard.
The value begins 3.14159, and its digits never end or repeat, which is why 14 March, written 3/14 in the United States, is celebrated as Pi Day.
