About this symbol
Tau is the usual symbol for torque in physics. It is also at the centre of a friendly argument: some mathematicians say the circle constant should be τ, 2π, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its radius. Bob Palais argued it in 2001 in an essay called “π Is Wrong!”, and Michael Hartl followed with his Tau Manifesto in 2010.
