About this symbol

Theta comes from teth, a Phoenician letter. In classical Athens it was a symbol of death: probably as the first letter of thanatos, death, and jurors used it on the pieces of pottery that served as ballots when voting for a death sentence.

Today it is the usual letter for an unknown angle in geometry and trigonometry.
