About this symbol

ℤ is the set of integers: whole numbers, positive, negative and zero. The Z comes from the German Zahlen, numbers. Mathematicians write it in this “blackboard bold” style, which grew from the way bold letters are drawn with a doubled stroke on a chalkboard.
