About this symbol

℔, an l and b with a bar across, abbreviates libra, the Latin word for a pound in weight, which is why a pound is written lb. Scribes struck a line through the letters to show they were an abbreviation, and one theory says that, written quickly, the sign turned into #, which is why Americans call # the pound sign.
