About this symbol

The en dash is half the length of an em dash, approximately the width of a lowercase n. Its main job is ranges of numbers, as in 1914–1918 or pages 10–12, where it reads as “to”.

It is longer than the hyphen on the keyboard, which joins words, and shorter than the em dash. Because most keyboards have no key for it, an Alt code is the quickest way to type it on Windows.
