About this symbol

The heavy check mark comes from ITC Zapf Dingbats, a set of ornaments and symbols drawn by the German type designer Hermann Zapf in 1978. It became one of the fonts built into PostScript printers such as Apple’s LaserWriter Plus, and Unicode’s Dingbats block includes its whole set, which is why so many ticks, crosses, stars and flowers sit side by side there.
