About this symbol
Unicode calls this the Maltese cross, the eight-pointed cross of the Knights Hospitaller, who ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798. Its eight points are traditionally said to stand for the eight Beatitudes. Many fonts draw it as the related cross pattée, with flared arms.
