About this symbol

Two raised fingers became a sign of victory in 1941, when the BBC encouraged people in occupied Europe to chalk up a V, and Winston Churchill made the hand gesture his trademark. In the 1960s protesters against the Vietnam War took up the same gesture as a sign of peace.

Turned round, with the back of the hand facing out, it is an insult in Britain, Ireland and Australia.
