About this symbol
In APL, the programming language Kenneth Iverson designed in the 1960s, ⍳ is iota, the index generator: ⍳5 gives the numbers 1 2 3 4 5. Iverson chose Greek letters and invented signs so that each operation could be written as one symbol.
