About this symbol
☊ is the ascending node, where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s path in the sky going north; its partner ☋ is the descending node. Eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon are near these points, and medieval astronomers called them the dragon’s head and tail.
