About this symbol

The biohazard symbol was designed in 1966 by Charles Baldwin, an engineer at Dow Chemical, working with the US National Cancer Institute. The team wanted a shape that was striking and easy to remember, yet meant nothing beforehand, so that people would learn it only as a warning.

It was drawn to be recognisable from any side and easy to stencil, and it is now the international warning for biological hazards.
