About this symbol
Clubs, hearts, spades and diamonds are the French suits, which appeared in France in the late fifteenth century and spread to most of the world. In French the suit is called trèfle, meaning clover, which is what the shape is drawn from. The English name, clubs, is a translation of the Spanish suit bastos, batons, a hint that Spanish cards reached England before French ones.
