About this symbol
Diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs are the French suits, which appeared in France in the late fifteenth century and spread to most of the world. In Unicode names, “black” means a filled shape, so the filled diamond is the black diamond suit even though diamonds are printed in red. The French call the suit carreau, from the Latin quadrum, a square.
