About this symbol

Hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs are the French suits, which appeared in France in the late fifteenth century and spread to most of the world. In Unicode names, “black” means a filled shape, not the colour on the card, so the filled heart is the black heart suit even though hearts are printed in red.
