About this symbol

The caduceus, a winged staff with two snakes, belongs to Hermes, the Greek messenger god of trade and travel. It is often used as a medical emblem in the United States, partly because the US Army Medical Department adopted it in 1902, but the traditional symbol of medicine is the single-snake staff of Aesculapius ⚕.
