About this symbol

The chi rho joins the first two letters of Christ’s name in Greek, chi Χ and rho Ρ, into one sign. According to the Roman writer Lactantius, the emperor Constantine had it painted on his soldiers’ shields before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, and it became one of the earliest Christian symbols.
