About this symbol

The sharp raises a note by a semitone. Like the flat and the natural, it grew out of the letter b in medieval music: a round b stood for B flat, and a square b for B natural, and the square form developed into the natural ♮ and the sharp ♯.

The sharp looks like the number sign #, but the two are separate characters: the sharp has slanted horizontal strokes and upright verticals.
