About this symbol

The peace symbol was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a British artist, for the first protest march from London to the weapons research site at Aldermaston, at Easter 1958, and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament soon adopted it. It combines the flag semaphore signals for N and D, for nuclear disarmament, inside a circle.

Holtom never copyrighted it, and it spread around the world as a general sign of peace.
