About this symbol
Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona. Its sign, the letters P and L joined, stands both for Pluto and for Percival Lowell, the astronomer who founded the observatory and spent years searching for a planet beyond Neptune. Since 2006 Pluto has been classed as a dwarf planet.
