About this symbol

The radiation trefoil was sketched in 1946 at the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. The first versions were magenta on a blue background; the yellow and black now used was chosen later because it stands out better.

The design is meant to suggest activity radiating from an atom, and its three blades have no official meaning.
