About this symbol

The International Symbol of Access was designed in 1968 by Susanne Koefoed, a Danish design student, for a competition run by Scandinavian design students. Rehabilitation International adopted it in 1969, after a circle for a head was added to her figure by Karl Montan.

It now marks accessible entrances, toilets, parking and transport around the world.
