About this symbol
Chess books print moves with letters for the pieces, but the letters change with the language: the king is K in English and R, for roi, in French. Figurine notation uses small pictures of the pieces instead, so a game can be read in any country, and Unicode’s chess symbols serve exactly that purpose.
In Unicode names, “white” means drawn in outline, which also happens to match the white pieces.
