About this symbol
The copyright sign comes from American law. The US Copyright Act of 1909 allowed a C in a circle as a short form of the copyright notice on pictures, prints and other visual works, and a 1954 amendment extended it to all works.
Since the United States joined the Berne Convention in 1989, a work is protected without any notice at all, in the US and in the many other countries that follow Berne. The sign is still widely used to tell readers who owns the rights and when the work was published. In the United States it still pays to use it: someone who copies a work bearing the notice cannot claim they did not know it was protected.
