About this symbol

The degree sign measures angles, temperatures and positions on the globe, as in 90°, 21 °C or 51° N. One long-standing theory says it began as a small raised zero in the counting system of ancient astronomers, which was built on 60 and is why there are 60 minutes in a degree.

It is easily confused with two look-alikes: the masculine ordinal indicator º, used in Spanish and Portuguese for numbers such as 1º, and the ring above ˚. Each is a separate character, and only the degree sign should be used for degrees.
