About this symbol

The section sign points to a numbered section of a document, most often a law or contract: § 12 means section 12, and §§ 12–14 means sections 12 to 14. It is usually explained as two letter s’s, for signum sectionis, the sign of the section, written one over the other.

In German and several other European languages it is called the paragraph sign, and it appears on German keyboards.
