About this symbol
Å, a with a ring above, began as a small o written over an a, for the long a sound that had moved towards o. Swedish used it from the sixteenth century, Norwegian from 1917 and Danish only from 1948, replacing the double aa. It is also the symbol of the ångström, a unit of length for atoms and light waves.
