About this symbol
In the third century BC Aristophanes of Byzantium, a librarian at Alexandria, marked pauses with dots at three heights: low for a short pause, middle for a longer one and high for the end of a thought. Over the centuries his system changed into the comma, the colon and the full stop, which moved down to sit on the line.
