About this symbol
The middle dot is older than the space between words. Roman inscriptions separated words with a raised dot, sometimes cut as a tiny triangle, and the habit faded by approximately 200 AD as writers ran words together instead.
It still has steady work. Catalan writes it inside a double l, as in col·lecció, to show that both letters are pronounced. Japanese uses it to separate the parts of foreign names written in katakana, and in maths it can mean multiplication, as in 3 · 4.
